Sound is one of most direct paths to healing and restoring balance to the body and its subconscious thoughts and emotions. It begins with one’s intention for inner change, health, healing, growth, balance and expansion.
It is a profound, effective, and efficient energy modality that creates a healing mechanism of resonance and vibration. As sound moves to those parts of us that are “out of tune,” we return to our natural rhythm and frequency. According to author and lecturer Dr. Deepak Chopra, Ayurveda teaches that:
All things in nature including us vibrate with sound, light and color. Everything is made up of energy at various frequencies. Sound frequencies affect everything about us. Your body is like an orchestra that is playing a wonderful symphony when you are healthy. When players in the orchestra are out of tune or playing the wrong notes it affects the entire orchestra. This is what happens in the body when one part of the body is not in harmony. Disease indicates that something is out of tune.
Intention is one of the most important components of Sound Healing. According to Jonathan Goldman, INTENTION + FREQUENCY = HEALING
What is sound therapy helpful for?
Physical healing and dealing with pain. Sound often can be used to minimize pain in the body. Pain receptors can only handle so much information, so when you fill them up with sound, they may no longer transmit pain impulses. Besides influencing specific cells or organs, sound can create an overall sense of wellbeing, igniting the body’s natural healing abilities to kick in. It may also boost the immune system. Often, sound works to create a more harmonious flow in many of the systems in the body – including the skeletal system, nervous, system, muscular system, digestive system, circulatory system, respiratory system, endocrine system and the acupuncture meridians.
Mental & Emotional
It helps to release emotional stress and to release stuck emotions, negative beliefs, mental patterns that are holding us back from living our true potential. It may help reduce stress, improve sleep patterns, focus, creativity and presence of mind.
Sound and music have been used since the beginning of time in all cultures to help bring us into a state of Spiritual healing, harmony and awakening. Sound can also be used to entrain us into harmony and to create a direct connection to our Soul and Spiritual advancement including resonating more with higher emotions such as gratitude, compassion, love and joy. Sound healing may bring you into states of consciousness where you have more access to information on how to live your life more fully with less stress, in balance and peace. It may also bring more love and light into your relationships and work. It is about learning to live your life in a way where you are given more and more openings into your being. Ultimately, it is about returning to that place of knowing where we are all ONE. (The Complete Guide to Sound & Healing by: David Gibson)
In my practice, I use a monochord table, which is an instrument first designed by the ancient Greek mathematician, musician and philosopher, Pythagoras. The monochord is a wooden table with 70 strings underneath. The strings are all tuned to one note. When strummed, these strings produce overtones which follow the mathematical progression of vibration. A study was published in 2012 of the effects of using monochord sounds on patients that were going through chemotherapy and the study showed significant improvement in their physical and psychological states and in their levels of anxiety.
I use tuning forks on acupuncture points to balance the meridians of the body. I also use chimes over the body to create sound and vibrations to balance the chakras and energy bodies and many other instruments such a crystal bowels, tinchas, drums or rattles, according to the patient’s needs.
